Norwegian coach Dahl will lead the Czech handball team

Update: 31.08.2022 17:00

Prague – Nor Bent Dahl became the new coach of the Czech handball players. The experienced coach replaced Jan Bašný in the national team, who was dismissed a month ago after a twelve-year tenure with the national team. The union management signed a contract with Dahl until June 30, 2024.

According to president Ondřej Zdráhala, the union chose from several options. The management bet on a foreign coach, just like with the men’s national team, which has been coached by the Spaniard Xavier Sabaté since the end of February. “We had several adepts, Bent Dahl impressed us the most, both from the point of view of handball and the training of the women’s national team,” said Zdráhala in a press release.

Dahl, like his predecessor Bašný, also works at the club level and currently leads the Romanian women’s team Ramnica Valcea. In Norway, he helped set up the concept of youth education, participated in 10 world and European championships as an analyst, and worked in the same role in 2013 and 2014 with the Russian men’s national team. In 2019, he won the EHF Cup with Siófok. He is also currently a lecturer of the European Handball Federation (EHF).

Dahl replaced Bašný in the national team, who had been with the national team since the summer of 2010. Under his leadership, the team participated in four European and three world championships. In 2017, Bašný reached the quarter-finals of the World Championship with the national team, and with the eighth place he took care of the best result of the national team in separate history. At last year’s championship, however, the Czechs finished 19th, and in the spring they failed to advance to the November Euros.

“The team hasn’t reached its performance ceiling yet. The players haven’t shown everything they have inside. It’s a big opportunity for me to work with players who have a big future ahead of them. The decision was easy,” said Dahl.

“When you have players like Markéta Jeřábková in your squad, who was one of the best in the Final Four of the Champions League, you know that there is potential in the team. And by no means is she the only one. There are many other girls reaching the highest level in Europe. I am looking forward to work and I am very motivated to achieve something together with the girls. I believe that I am in the right place at the right time to make the right decisions,” added Dahl, whose assistant will be compatriot Tor Odvar Moen.

The union leadership has high hopes for the fifty-two-year-old Norwegian expert. “We have huge player potential in the women’s national team. It is necessary for the girls to get an impulse and strengthen their self-confidence a little. I believe that the coach will give the team a new face and we will regularly place ourselves in the top ranks,” said Zdráhala.

Dahl will participate in the overall concept of all the national teams so that the “A” is connected with the youth national teams. “In the future, the team needs to be built cross-sectionally, we don’t want to raise just one quality generation. It is necessary that every year or two new talented players join the team. Only then will the squad be composed correctly and we can achieve long-term success,” Zdráhala pointed out.

“It’s not that I bring the Norwegian philosophy to Czech handball, I want to bring my philosophy. I like high-speed handball. If you look at my previous years at club level, you’d see a lot of physical preparation and speed. That’s also why I’d say , that I’m a modern coach. I want to be very offensive and also play handball that people want to see,” Dahl said.

She will meet her new charges for the first time at the end of September, when the national team will have a training camp. A month later, the Czechs will play two warm-up matches in Sweden. “It’s good that we will have time to prepare for the intense qualifying matches (for the World Cup) that await us in the coming year. It will also be an opportunity to get to know each other, I will get closer to the players and they will get closer to me. We will find out what we expect together.” stated Dahl.
