The first giga-factory of batteries for electric cars opened in Europe! Northvolt has started production at its plant in Sweden.

From now on, the manufacture of batteries for the electric vehicles and hybrids will be able to be done in Europe! So far, the manufacturing plants were all located either in Asia or on the American continent.

With the arrival of a new player in Sweden, the situation changes in this growing market and several manufacturers will be able to benefit from it.

A start-up specializing in batteries

Northvolt is a start-up specializing in batteries, founded by two former executives from Tesla who worked on the first gigafactory present in Nevada.

The Swedish company has taken up this concept of “giga-factory”: a site for the construction of batteries with a very large annual production (around 60 GWh), which would supply up to a million vehicles per year.

The Swedish startup has received investments from several companies, including Volkswagen, to build this battery factory on its soil. The latter also wants to create a 50/50 joint venture with the startup to launch another battery factory to supply its own future electric vehicles.

The first battery cell has been produced!

This week, Northvolt announced that “ Northvolt One“, Its first gigafactory located in the north of Sweden, produced its very first cell:” Northvolt Ett’s first cell represents a milestone Northvolt has worked on since announcing the gigafactory in 2017. The cell is in a prismatic cell format and rolled off the cell assembly line on December 28. Commissioning and ramp-up of the plant will continue until 2022, when the first commercial deliveries to customers will be made. »

Peter Carlsson, CEO and Co-Founder of Northvolt, also commented on the announcement: “ Today is a big milestone for Northvolt, for which the team has worked very hard. Of course, this first cell is just the start. Over the next few years, we look forward to seeing Northvolt Ett significantly expand its generation capacity to enable the European transition to clean energy.. »

With the official start of production, Northvolt aims to gradually increase production to 60 GWh per year by the end of next year.

For these customers in the automotive, industrial and energy storage sectors, Northvolt Ett will deliver cells of various sizes and the first deliveries will begin next year.
