noa * designs a suspended Spa that subverts physics

In Valdaora, at the foot of the Plan de Corones ski area, there is a Spa that literally leaves you breathless. Designed by noa* network of architecture for theHotel Hubertusthe new wellness space called Hub of huts is located on a platform a 15 meters high and is made up of a series of little houses’some straight, others “overturned” by 180 degrees.

Suspended on the mountain landscape, the huts cause an alienation effect in the viewer, playing with perceptions and (apparently) challenging the laws of physics.

«The essence of this project is the reversal of horizons, with the consequent effect of astonishment for the observer. But if you think about it, the change of perspectives is a very common exercise in wellness areas, where, depending on whether you are lying in the sauna, sitting in the relaxation area or immersed upside down in the pool, the views change constantly “, explains from study noa * the architect in charge of the project Luke Rungger.

Inspiration has come observing the landscape reflection in the waters of the cantilevered swimming pool of the hotel, a pool that joins the new wing of the hotel to the old family hut and which since 2006 has been the symbol of the structure; the fleeting image was converted into reality by the architects, who bet on the subversion of the concepts of straight and upside down. Hub of huts can be reached via a suspended walkway; the various rooms and functions are organized on two levels.

Upstairs there are two whirlpools, two panoramic showers and a changing room. The lower floor is a textile free area: the central part, indoors, houses the foyer. From here you can access the soft sauna, the Finnish sauna, a shower cabin, the frozen mist shower and a third outdoor pool, from where the gaze can sweep towards the nearby mountains.

The lower level of the platform causes in the observer a sensation of pleasant disorientation. As you go down, the temperature rises and the environment becomes more protected. It looks like a descent into the center of the earth, with the consequent reversal of the poles ”sums up the architect Gottfried Gruber, who supervised the project, an outpost of well-being that fluctuates between heaven and earth.
