They said this in response to a new lockdown coupled with a blanket ban on public services. TASR was informed about this by the press office of the Conference of Bishops of Slovakia (KBS).

In their opinion, the bishops claim that since the beginning of the pandemic, KBS has supported both compliance with the measures and vaccinations for all those who are allowed by their health. “Because we care about every human life, the situation of hospitals and because we see the exhaustion of health professionals, we have already accepted many limitations and patiently motivate everyone to take responsibility. However, a promise was made that public services would no longer be banned. “ said the bishops.

They don’t like it

At the same time, they claim that a lockdown and a blanket ban on public services could have been avoided. “We are very annoyed that it is happening again. We do not consider a blanket ban on public worship to be appropriate in a situation where many other areas of life remain open and we call for its revocation as soon as possible. “ they noted.

They added that a look at neighboring countries, which strictly respect religious freedom, shows that there are other solutions here as well.

Just confession or baptism

Believers will be prohibited from attending group services during the next lockdown period. Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OĽANO) confirmed that individual pastoral activity would be allowed, so believers would be able to go to confession or individual reception. “It will also be possible to organize Holy Masses online.” said the prime minister, saying that the number of people needed for this purpose would also be allowed.

The words of the priest

The priest and former vicar of Spiš, Ján Duda, expressed indignation at the information that the Holy Masses entrusted to him should not be served from Thursday, and that he should serve them only through social networks. “I remind you that this is the third time that Holy Mass has been forbidden in this way. I don’t know if there is a country where this could happen. “ said the priest.

He reminded that exceptions apply to baptism and funerals, but not to holy masses. “No virtual Holy Mass replaces personal participation for Catholics. A virtual holy mass can be a spiritual encouragement, but it cannot replace personal participation. “ added Duda. At the same time, he claims that the current attack, for the third time in a row, against the Eucharist is so obvious that it reminds him of the time of the Council of Trent (1545–1563).

He challenges Heger

He called on Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OĽANO) to reconsider his decision and include an exception for Catholics to hold a holy mass in a restricted regime, for example, as has been the case so far.

On Monday (November 22), the priest Anton Ziolkovský stated on the social network that he understands the circumstances when strict measures need to be taken. However, he argued that preventing believers from accessing the sacraments and closing churches for them was a red line. He noted that the churches had so far acted responsibly in the pandemic, supporting measures and encouraging vaccination.

At the same time, at the beginning of the week, he stated that he expects, albeit with restrictions, but Christmas Holy Masses attended by believers to be celebrated in every church in Slovakia.
