No Sudden Move is a crime thriller he directed Stiven Soderberg, Oscar winner for film Traffic which stands, among other things, behind the franchise Ocean’s, films about Che Guevara and the excellent series The Knick. He was in charge of the script Ed Solomon, best known for his work on Men in Black i Now You See Me. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and arrived on HBO Max servers on July 1st.
The film is set in Detroit in 1954 and follows a group of petty criminals, Kurt (Don Čidl), Ronalda (Benisio del toro) and Charlie (Kieran Kalkin) who are engaged to accountant Meta (Dejvid Harbur) steal what they think is an ordinary document. As it usually happens, a seemingly simple plan goes wrong and they go into action to find the people who hired them and for what exact reason. During the action, they will meet a number of suspicious types, and they are not benefiting from the fact that Kurt and Ronald were blackmailed by local mobsters.
Of course, this description is only the basis of an intricate narrative structure with a specific tempo characteristic of Soderbergh, who unexpectedly added to the old school crime fiction set in the fifties the social self-consciousness characteristic of modern films. Everything is full of suspicious types with crumpled old suits and hats, while inconspicuously with the sounds of bi-bap jazz it conveys the socio-cultural context and the inevitable changes that Detroit is facing – in the background of criminal affairs is a film about interracial relations, industry and politics.
The film has a lot of small details that affect the plot itself, such as the subtle racial tensions between Kurt and Ronaldo, as well as the fact that Ronald drinks in every scene. A simple criminal business that goes wrong develops into several subplots that fill the narrative and make our attention be occupied every second. In that way, the plot is a bit confusing and quite complicated, but in fact it doesn’t bother us that much because the impressive cast raises the film to a higher level and leaves us to guess who to trust and who will survive.
At first I thought that something was wrong with the video I was watching, but it turns out that Soderbergh consciously used the so-called an ultra-wide fisheye lens that captures strong visual distortions designed to create a wide panoramic or hemispherical image. The purpose of this choice is not very clear to me, especially since the action mostly takes place indoors – he may have wanted to evoke a nostalgic past, but I must admit that it bothered me more than it was interesting to me.
The film is based on Kurt’s and Ronaldo’s relationship who have to work together even though they don’t trust each other and has a few comic scenes, but everything somehow goes straight to be a good mystery and there is no constant race against time to be a good thriller. It was impressive to me that the plot, which included death threats, beatings and a few shots to the head, was packed as if we were watching something. perfectly safe because at no time was the heavy atmosphere of inevitable violence felt. The real fun of this film lies in watching performances and interactions between great actors, but I believe that will not be enough for many.
No Sudden Move is a film in which Soderbergh combines an old school crime novel from the fifties with a modern sense of social self-awareness and his characteristic style, but despite the impressive cast, the final impression he leaves is – nothing special.
my final grade: 6/10
