The Mitsubishi Outlander is one of the seven most popular seven-seater vehicles in the country. How much is in demand? Even before the fourth generation docked in the port, even before they touched its doors in the showroom, checked the third row seat, figured out if the exterior was indeed to their liking – ordered it about 1,200 drivers, and Colmobil, the importer, convinced that no matter how much flew off the shelves.
In honor of the grand launch and befitting its status, we went on an Outlander trip to the depths of the Jordan Valley, or rather to the glorious aqueduct Uja, the same slide built by King Herod’s architects and first acquainted with me during military service, about the time Herod did in reserve.
With all due respect to the car, all I asked before leaving was how the air conditioner works, because any squeaking, or coughing, or God forbid shutdown of activity – and I would be pulled out at the end of the day in well-done mode, preferably with chips and lettuce on the side.
So how is the fourth generation? Twenty years after it went off the production line and sold more than 2.6 million units worldwide, the Outlander walked into a beauty salon, showed a picture of a luxury Gippon and said, “Do something in style, but a little different.” No longer the style of a loyal workhorse, but a show to which the word “extrovert” can be attached.
You will see him on the road and ask in amazement “Outlander?”. Yes, it is. Prominent captions that emphasize that it is indeed a client, a large grill, a three-story lighting unit, large 20-inch rims. A muscular, aggressive look, one that screams “Who’s coming in front of me?”.
Only that’s not all. We moved around in the 4X4 version, a luxury, which also sends heavy shelling in the interior design. Leather upholstery, soft padding, excellent “Boss” audio system, with ten speakers. An overhead data display projected on the windshield, a panoramic sunroof, three-zone climate control, just the kind we needed during our trip to the hot country.
It should be immediately noted that to add to the impression there has been a slight growth in dimensions to add to the spaces. 36 mm were added to the wheelbase, 52 mm in width and 35 mm in height. Elya is an adult, and if so – think of a good restaurant to perform the sulha in. All in all, this is an impressive noise that ends up emitting a “blackmailer”.
And yet even though the car has quite a few storage compartments, if all three rows of seats are manned, the trunk will provide you with space for only 160 liters, which is about washing powder and two bags of milk. If you drive up to five people, the cabin will already grow to a volume of 793 liters, which is a lot.
There is nothing like the smell of Samaria on the morning, as the poet writes. A rugged rocky landscape, devoid of green touches, befitting the height of summer. We turned right at the Tapuach junction when the first stop was the monument, which is located not a street from the town of Yitav and was erected in memory of 54 soldiers who were killed in the Yasur helicopter crash in May 1977.
The air conditioner worked at full throttle, even excellent. The Outlander has an atmospheric engine, with a volume of 2,500 cc and a power of 181 hp, which is an addition of 31 hp compared to the outgoing generation. The vehicle gets an eight-speed continuous automatic transmission. Hearing him often struggles, but when he sailed for pleasure, as on the open roads of Samaria, he was very pleasant and friendly, and when we went out for detours, he did not lack strength.
We stopped to eat a popsicle to cool the atmosphere and continued towards the Uja. Noise isolation is also noteworthy. Mitsubishi explained that this was due to double-glazed windows and assistance with rubber castings to cover the door openings. Excellent insulation, but not hermetic.
We arrived at Uja at noon. A flock of sheep quenched his thirst in the water channel, one of the guys hurried in to catch a cold, while Ofer, the guide, hurried us to get into the vehicles for a short technical drive, still a 4X4 vehicle that was supposed to do the job.
Well, in the driving mode selector, in the dual-propulsion models, there are six to choose from. Eco – economical, normal – for everyday, Tramac – for sporty driving, Gravel – for improving grip when reaching a demanding trail, snow – for a smooth and very (mud) road – which improves the ability to move when the mud makes it difficult.
It’s just that with all the davin of an impressive ventral spacing of 21.3 cm and with a suitable driving position, the Outlander is not really an SUV.
So for the sake of illustration we made a small descent near the Uja, including hoisting wheels in the air. We checked, and indeed the car has a system that helps with downhill skiing, which worked well and calmed amateur jeeps as well. We made a tiny “V” and continued.
We left the valley in the direction of Jerusalem. Very quickly we noticed that this is not an economical vehicle and certainly not a green one. In fuel consumption we managed to move about ten kilometers per liter. The manufacturer also says that the consumption is a liter for every 11.1 kilometers, yet it is a large and hungry engine. Also in terms of air pollution the Outlander does not excel and stabilizes at a score of 14, red.
At the level of grades, in the safety department, the vehicle receives a score of 6 in terms of equipment. Although equipped with 11 standard airbags, including a central airbag between the front seats, it also has autonomous braking when reversing, an adaptive cruise control system that maintains distance and the ability to detect dead space vehicles, but lacks an active lane departure warning system, which is quite common today.
There is no doubt that Outlander enthusiasts will forgive a few small bugs found along the way. If they loved the previous generation, then the current one in general will be a leap forward for them. The look it got a serious splash, the armature that got a piece of assistance, the capabilities that benefited from the upgrade. What are the forecasts? Establishing power and conquering new goals, however, is a banker.
And in front of the petrol-loving Outlander, Mercedes continues to water the garden and report a strengthening of the green trend. Management reported that from 2022 to 2030, it intends to invest more than $ 40 billion in the development of the electric fleet. The intention is that in 2022, in each segment, Mercedes will have an electric vehicle, and from 2025, every new vehicle that the German will offer will also have an electric version. In 2025, the giant also plans to launch three new platforms for electric vehicles. Already, we updated there, there are about 530,000 Mercedes charging stations around the world.
Toyota Motors, an importer of Toyota, recently announced the delivery of 130,000 hybrid vehicles in Israel. Today, 11 Toyota hybrid-electric models are sold here, and Corolla is the most popular of them, with more than 8,100 vehicles sold in the first half of 2021. In a few weeks, Toyota will launch a new hybrid model – the Yaris Cross.
And for a new appointment in the automotive world. Sefi Yossi Dayan has been appointed CEO of EV MOTORS, a new company that specializes in marketing private, commercial and electric vehicles. The company imports vehicles made by JAC, ANKAI and LEVC. Dayan also continues to serve as a senior member of the Association of Safety and Transport Officers.
