Nicolae Ciucă, message on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

“The day of December 3 is, like every year, an opportunity to raise awareness at the level of the whole society and to understand the problems specific to people with disabilities. They are people we know, interact with every day, on the street, at work, in everyday life, people who have the same rights as anyone else and who should not be affected because of their special needs. This year’s theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities focuses on transformative solutions for inclusive development. This implies, equally, knowledge of the difficulties specific to each level of disability and openness to solutions that support social inclusion. In addition to access to health and social services, access to the labor market is extremely important for a good part of people with disabilities who have the ability to carry out certain activities. Everyone needs to be given a chance. I have seen numerous examples of people who overcame their limits, who did not let themselves be defeated by the disabilities that mark their lives and managed to carve out a successful path”, reads Nicolae Ciucă’s message on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The Prime Minister says that he has all the respect for them and is sure that such examples can be multiplied through solidarity on the part of society and especially involvement on the part of the authorities and decision-makers.

It is the approach supported by the Prime Minister and through the measures he adopts in the Government: “We started our mandate by adapting the institutional framework to European requirements and standards in the field of protection and promotion of the rights of people with disabilities. We wanted to ensure the full and effective participation of people with disabilities, based on freedom of decision, in all areas of life and in an accessible and resilient environment. Also, important steps have been taken in terms of de-bureaucratizing the relationship with the authorities, which allows people with disabilities to no longer have to go to specialized commissions for the re-evaluation of files, as the documents can be sent through an online platform. Considering also the effects felt by people against the backdrop of price increases and the energy crisis, we have already decided on several measures aimed at supporting the most affected social categories, including the disabled”.

“Our measures are also aimed at facilitating access to the labor market for people with disabilities. We have, in this regard, a special project through which people in this category benefit from support worth 5,000 euros to purchase devices and assistive technologies and access technologies, other than those financed by the National Single Social Insurance Fund of health. Access to assistive technology is an extra chance for any disabled person who wants a job. The chance of inclusive development offered to people with disabilities is a challenge that I believe we can face, provided that the reforms that Romania has proposed in the social plan for vulnerable groups are implemented. In the National Recovery and Resilience Plan we have almost 197 million euros available. We are talking about projects that consider, among other things, aspects related to the modernization and creation of social infrastructure for people with disabilities, the digitization and management of the processes of granting all social assistance benefits, interventions regarding the stimulation of the social economy and the integration of people into the labor market inactive and disadvantaged workers. I want every Romanian to feel respected, and that the existence of a disability does not restrict fundamental rights in any way. I wish people with disabilities health and I assure them that inclusive development will be maintained among the Government’s priorities”, the message also states.
