Next surprise resignation in Italy

After Federica Sanfilippo, another athlete from Italy has surprisingly ended her biathlon career – and that at the age of just 25 years.

Eleonora Fauner is giving up her biathlon rifle. She has been part of the Italian national squad since 2017, and her coaches also wanted her to be part of the “Milan Cortina 2026” perspective team and thus also for the coming winter season – but Fauner refused.

“Actually, it’s not that long since I made that decision. I was planning on continuing, but around April 20 I changed my mind about continuing to be an athlete,” the 25-year-old told the portal. Biathlon Azzurro”.

The reason for her retirement from biathlon is “simple”, said Fauner: “We opened a restaurant with my family and after being able to rest for the whole of April at the end of the long season, I felt like changing and getting into this new job to dive in. So I thought about it until last week and then I made my decision, which surprised everyone.”

Fauner won the IBU Cup sprint

Cooking has always been her “second passion” after biathlon. In the past years, in which she participated in the IBU Cup, she was “never completely satisfied”: “I know that I have always done my best in every aspect of sport, but now I want a new path full of challenges hit.”

Her retirement from active sport comes as a surprise given that Fauner had won a sprint first place in 22/23 at the IBU Cup ahead of compatriot Hannah Auchentaller. “I’m very happy with what I’ve done this year and in the sport in general. It was an experience of a lifetime for me. But you also have to understand when you get into a situation where there isn’t much room for improvement there,” added the Italian.
