OM Digital Solution started formally working earlier this year, so it is clear that the new PEN was created under the wings of the original Olympus. The new owner adheres to the Olympus brand and also, for now, the PEN product line.
The novelty is a stylish mirrorless MFT (Micro Four Thirds) standard, where the dimensions of the entire sensor are 18 × 13.5 mm (diagonal 22.5 mm), of which the active area is 17.3 × 13.0 mm (diagonal 21, 6 mm), with an aspect ratio of 4: 3.
Dimensions of the device: width 118.3 mm, height 68.5 mm and depth 38.1 mm. The weight, including the SD card and battery, without the lens, is 337 g. The dimensions correspond to a more or less ordinary smartphone, but with the lens it does not fit in every pocket. The body is not sealed against the weather.
CMOS image sensor with a resolution of 20 Mpix. is stabilized, with an efficiency of up to 4.5 EV. Continuous shooting speed 8 frames / sec. Focusing detects face detection or eye focus. The 3 ”touch display has a resolution of approx. 1 million pixels, 3: 2 aspect ratio. The display is tilt up and down, it can be rotated to take a selfie. Wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity is present.
On a single charge according to the CIPA standard, it takes 360 pictures or, depending on the method of use, 80 – 140 minutes of video, which can handle 4K resolution. The battery is charged in the body of the device via a USB micro-B connector, the mains is a USB mains charger. Of the essential characteristics, that’s all, a complete specification is available here.
The retail price is approx. CZK 21,000 including VAT per body, the set with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ lens costs CZK 23,500. The camera is to be available from June 25, 2021, the color is silver or black.
MFT devices are manufactured only by Panasonic and Olympus, resp. now OM Digital Solution. As mentioned above, in addition to the new E-P7, the PEN series includes only the E-PL10, with a resolution of 16 Mpix, but otherwise similar properties, for about CZK 16,000. The Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9, which is practically identical in parameters, is also equipped with an electronic viewfinder and costs approx. CZK 16,500.
We can also compare with APS-C format devices, such as Fujifilm X-A7, it does not have stabilization, on the other hand the display can be rotated freely, it has the advantage of a fous larger sensor, the price is up to CZK 20,000 including the lens. Similarly, the Canon EOS M6 mark II, the sensor has a higher resolution of 32.5 Mpix and is not stabilized, the price is about 22,000 CZK.
The competition for the new PEN E-P7 is therefore great. MFT class devices can be small, relatively light, portable with high-quality video output. However, the E-P7 will be difficult, in the whole specification I did not find anything that would stand out from the competition, ie except for the price, but the sales will not help.
