A group of scientists from the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the University of Cyprus discovered a new variant of the deltacron coronavirus – a hybrid of delta and omicron, they write “RIA.News”.

According to Professor Leontios Kostrikkis, his team examined 25 samples of the strain taken from patients. As a result, they found a variant that combined some of the delta and omicron mutations.

As noted by Kostrikkis, this scientific achievement of the University of Cyprus has clinical significance that can be used in the future.

He added that now Cyprus is at the peak of a new wave of the pandemic, but the epidemiological curve will begin to decline from Monday, and the omicron wave will calm down in the next three weeks.

In turn, the Minister of Health of Cyprus, Michalis Hadzipandelas, said that the “deltacron” does not cause concern for the authorities: “We have no concern, since this is a combination of two mutations already present in our country.”
