2020 was a record year for the Audi RS range. In the year of the pandemic, 29,300 high-performance vehicles were registered worldwide. An important result for a price list that is constantly expanding and which includes 15 R and RS models.
Speaking of the brand’s upcoming sports cars (including the long-awaited RS 3 shown for the first time with the official photos of the prototypes) is Sebastian Grams, Managing Director of Audi Sport.
More and more electrified RS
One of the most interesting passages of the interview carried out by Audi with Grams concerns the electrification strategy of sports models. The process was started with the RS 6 Avant, RS 7 Sportback and RS Q8 equipped with a 600hp 4.0 TFSI biturbo V8 supported by the 48 Volt mild hybrid technology. This is the manager’s thought:
“Future Audi Sport models will take further steps in this direction with plug-in hybrid or full electric solutions. The electron propulsion opens up new opportunities on a technical level.
Think of the exceptional speed of torque distribution between the front and rear end made possible by the quattro electric all-wheel drive: no mechanical system can stand the comparison. Or, again, the precision and speed in the distribution of the thrust between the wheels of the same axle, characteristic of the electric torque vectoring system “.
For these reasons, the future of Audi Sport will be increasingly zero-emission:
“By 2024, more than 50% of the Audi Sport range will consist of partially or fully electrified models. A share that will reach 80% by 2026. Finally, by 2030 we will have only high-performance electric or plug-in hybrid cars in the range.
In general, the high-performance cars of the future will be developed following the directives of emotion, sustainability and digitalization ”.
The RS 3 are ready
Together with the press release, Audi has released a series of images depicting Sebastian Grams and all the Audi RSs in the range. In the foreground, it is impossible not to notice the two prototypes of the RS 3 Sportback and Sedan.
The two models now seem ready for the official presentation and are wrapped in red and black camouflage. On the side there are the numbers “1-2-4-5-3” which remember the ignition order of the five cylinders of the engine. A further confirmation of the fact that the new versions will also mount the 2.5 TFSI.
The power? There is talk of two variants of 420 and 450 hp to take back the scepter of the most powerful hatchback on the planet currently held by the Mercedes A45 AMG S.
