Nemrut Caldera will be included in the UNESCO list


Turkey took action to introduce Nemrut Crater Lake and its surroundings to the world. The region, which attracts attention with its natural beauties as well as its biodiversity, is aimed to host tourists.

Efforts are underway to introduce the Nemrut Caldera, at an altitude of 2,250 meters, which welcomes thousands of local and foreign tourists every year in the Tatvan district of Bitlis, to the world by including it in UNESCO’s Global Geopark Network.

Within the scope of the “Bitlis Nemrut-Süphan Potential Geopark Area” project initiated by Bitlis Eren University (BEÜ) 5 years ago, Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Engineering Department of Geological Engineering Faculty Member Yıldırım Güngör and academicians from BEU continue their research in and around Nemrut Crater Lake.

In addition to its natural beauties and unique scenery, the academics who examine the region, which stands out with its hot and cold lakes, ice cave, steam chimney and biodiversity, identify the stone and soil structure, vegetation, endemic plant species and geomorphological features of the caldera.

APPLICATION TO UNESCO

In line with the reports to be prepared as a result of the scientific studies that have been completed, it is planned to apply to UNESCO for the inclusion of the Nemrut Caldera, which received the “Award of Excellence” within the scope of the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) Project, in the Global Geopark Network.

With the approval of the project, it is aimed to make Nemrut Crater Lake, which has a great contribution to tourism in the region, a world-renowned place.
