Within the cooperation between the Institute and the Post of Serbia, related to the publication of the series of postage stamps “European Nature Protection”, two were published last year, which contain motifs of the Landscape of Outstanding Features “Cultural Landscape Tršić-Tronoša” and areas proposed for protection Landscape of Outstanding Features “Vardenik”.
The landscape of exceptional features “Cultural landscape Tršić-Tronoša” covers an area of 1802.57 ha, in the city of Loznica.
The natural values of the area are preserved complexes of indigenous licorice and other forests, while out of a total of 145 protected wild species of plants and animals, 83 are protected, and 62 species belong to the category of strictly protected such as periwinkle or holly (Ilex aquifolium. L.) . The coastal belt of watercourses is a habitat of amphibians and reptiles with 11 protected species. From the bird fauna, the presence of the middle woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius), the red magpie (Lanius collurio) and the vine bunting (Emberiza hortulana) stand out, as a species of international importance.
52 species have been recorded in the mammal fauna, and the bat fauna is represented by 18 strictly protected species. Based on the study of protection for the area “Cultural landscape Tršić-Tronoša”, the Institute for Nature Protection of Serbia, the Government of the Republic of Serbia passed in 2019 the Decree on declaring the Landscape of Outstanding Features “Cultural landscape Tršić-Tronoša, in order to preserve immovable cultural goods, natural values , the specific configuration of the terrain and the regional diversity of the character of the landscape, due to the unique combination of natural and created values.
The region of exceptional features “Vardenik” is located in southeastern Serbia within the area of Vlasina and Krajista, and for the most part includes the mountain Vardenik. The relief of the Vardenik mountain was created over a long period of time under the influence of complex geological and geomorphological processes.
The flora of the area is characterized by great biodiversity with a total of 414 plant species. This small area is inhabited by about 12.3 percent of the total flora of Serbia, with ten percent being endemic taxa. The area is characterized by the presence of 54 woody and shrubby species, eight of which are in the status of “protected species”: bear hazel (Corylus colurna), birch (Betula pendula), juniper (Juniperus communis), wild rose (Rosa canina), small-leaved linden (Tilia cordata ), white hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), dogwood (Cornus mas) and buckthorn (Staphylea pinnata). The ichthyofauna of the area has maintained a high level of autochthony and the presence of brown trout is significant.
PIO “Vardenik” is part of an ecologically important area of Serbia, an internationally important area for plants (IPA), an internationally important area for birds (IBA) and a selected area for butterflies (PBA). Based on the study of the protection of the Institute, a proposal was given to the municipality of Surudulica for the proclamation of the Landscape of Outstanding Features “Varednik”.
