Suara.com – National Waste Care Day will be commemorated on 21 February. During a pandemic, concern about waste, especially medical waste, is a serious concern.
A number of medical wastes ranging from face shields, disposable personal protective equipment (PPE), to PCR equipment from hospitals, health centers, to clinics and laboratories must be managed properly.
Management of medical waste is important during a pandemic, considering that Covid-19 is a highly contagious disease.
Even according to Professor of the Faculty of Public Health, Hasanuddin University Makassar, Prof. Dr. Anwar Daud, household-scale infectious waste also has the potential to spread the Corona virus.
“The increase in household infectious waste is important for the public to know and do to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus,” said Prof. Anwar through his report at a seminar on Medical Waste Care, Monday (15/2/2021).
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) reported an alternative treatment of medical waste in the midst of a pandemic, which is not included as a category of B3 waste, aka toxic and hazardous waste.
“We actually offer a concept, before the pandemic, these wastes do not need to be included as B3 waste, as long as they are processed first. The same thing, we can ensure that the virus in medical waste can become something valuable,” said Deputy for Science. LIPI Knowledge, Dr. En. Agus Haryono.
The importance of medical waste management obliges responsible officers in each settlement to ensure that there is no illegal reuse by irresponsible persons.
Apart from being dangerous, illegal reuse also risks spreading the Corona virus.
