National Council confirms CDS-PP Congress on November 27th and 28th – Politics

The National Council of the CDS-PP today approved the convocation of the 29th Congress of the party for the 27th and 28th of November, with 64% of votes in favor and 29% against, an official source of the party told Lusa.

According to the same source, 145 councilors (64%) voted in favor of the proposal presented by the board, against 65 councilors (29%) and 16 abstained (7%).

Also the regulation of the magna meeting and the regulation for the election of congressmen were approved at today’s meeting of the highest body between congresses.

The regulations for the election of congressional delegates were approved with 169 votes in favor (75%), 15 votes against (7%) and 42 abstentions (19%), according to the same source.

The regulation of the 29th Ordinary Congress of the CDS-PP received 168 votes in favor (74%), 14 votes against (6%) and 44 abstentions (19%).

The National Council of the CDS-PP has been meeting by videoconference and behind closed doors since around 11:00 am, to analyze the results of the local elections and schedule the 29th Congress of the party, which will be anticipated.

The centrist magna meetings take place every two years and if this happened on the scheduled date, it would be in late January or early February 2022, since the last one was in late January of last year, in Aveiro.

The regulation of the congress, to which Lusa had access, establishes that the party’s magna meeting takes place “in a place to be defined by the Organizing Committee of the Congress (COC)” and the document with the rules for the elections of delegates states that the local structural and districts “may present, to the COC, candidacy for the location to hold the congress until October 14th” and that the chosen location will be disclosed on the CDS website “until October 22nd”.

The document also stipulates that candidacies for the presidency of the CDS and the National Political Commission “are presented by the first subscriber of a Global Strategy Motion and candidacies to the other bodies by any militant” and must “be done by the time defined by the president of the Congress Bureau”.

The global strategy motions, which set the direction of the party, must be delivered to the COC by “11:59 pm on November 15” and must be “signed by a minimum number of 300 members”.

These motions are voted alternatively.

The election of municipal and regional delegates will take place on October 31, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Candidates for the leadership of the CDS are the current leader, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos (pictured), and the centrist MEP and president of the district of Braga, Nuno Melo.

The Congress of the CDS-PP will thus be held on the same weekend as the meeting magna of Chega, a subject that marked the discussion at the National Council, according to sources present at the meeting told Lusa.

While those close to Nuno Melo asked for the postponement of Congress, the leadership defended the proposed date.
