NASA is completing the installation of a space telescope

Now we can only wait for new images from space.

NASA is one big step closer to putting up a space telescope James Webb-a in use. The agency successfully installed a basic mirror covered with gold, which completed all the main installations of the instrument.

The mission crew still has to align the telescope’s optics by moving the primary mirror segments (a process that takes months), but it’s a good sign that the $ 10 billion device is in good condition.

JWST it also requires a third course correction as it moves toward Lagrange Point L2 over 930,000 miles from Earth. Astronomers will use the point to study infrared light without interference, potentially offering insight into an early universe that is not possible with Hubble’s and other equipment.

The first images from the telescope will not be available until the summer, and it could take much longer before those images are translated into significant discoveries. Nevertheless, scheduling is an achievement.

JWST represents the first time that NASA has unpacked a complex observatory in space. This showed that projects like this are sustainable, even if they are unlikely to be common in the near future.
