Naked torture: Judgment in rape case today

A verdict is set to be handed down on Monday (October 4th) in a case of torture and rape of a woman in Noakhali’s Begumganj. Judge Joynal Abedin of the district’s Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal-1 will announce the verdict, said state lawyer Mamunur Rashid Lavlu.

The two accused in the case are Delwar Hossain, chief of Delwar Bahini in Begumganj upazila and his associate Abul Kalam. They are now in jail.

Lawyer Mamunur Rashid Lavlu said a total of 15 people, including 12 witnesses from the plaintiffs and three witnesses from the accused, were called in 13 working days in the sensational case.

According to the case file, on September 2, 2020, in Joykrishnapur village of Eklashpur union, members of the Delwar Bahini entered a house and tortured a middle-aged woman by stripping her naked. A video captured on a mobile phone at the time went viral on social media on October 4, a month after the incident.
The woman, who was in hiding for fear of terrorists, was rescued on the same day and taken into police custody.

The woman then filed a case against Delwar and Kalam at Begumganj Model Police Station on October 5, 2019 and April 6, 2020 for raping her twice.

The woman also filed two more cases under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act and the Pornography Act for torturing her naked and spreading the video through social media. Delwar’s associate Kalam and eight others were charged in the two cases.

Lawyer Mamunur Rashid Lavlu said charges were framed against two accused in the case, Delwar Hossain Delu and Mohammad Ali Prakash Abul Kalam, in the court on February 16.
