Mysterious Acute Hepatitis Can Cause Diarrhea Symptoms in Children – An acute hepatitis outbreak that affects hundreds of children in the world today has caused severe liver inflammation.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that currently there are 228 cases of acute hepatitis in children spread across 20 countries, including Indonesia. Most of the children were under ten years old.

Health scientists in the world report that the disease also occurs in many healthy children. But due to the infection, many of them needed a liver transplant. In fact, one child was reported to have died from liver failure.

The number of liver transplants in children is increasing globally, than has usually been seen during the same time period in previous years. Cases of acute hepatitis were also previously unheard of in children.

The current suspicion of scientists, acute hepatitis is caused by adenovirus infection. According to the UK’s Health Safety Board, adenovirus was the most common pathogen found in 40 of the 53 confirmed cases tested in the UK.

“Investigations are increasingly showing that the increase in cases of severe hepatitis may be related to adenovirus infection, but other causes are still being actively investigated,” the agency said, quoted by the Times of India.

Adenoviruses are a large group of viruses that can infect animals as well as humans. Called adenovirus because of the initial isolated tissue, namely the adenoids or tonsils.

Adenovirus has at least seven different species. Within the species, there is a genetic similarity to the corona virus and other viruses. However, it is not referred to as a variant, but as a subtype of adenovirus.

It was also explained that most adenovirus subtypes cause mild disease in humans. Some species cause respiratory diseases, such as croup in young children and infants. Others cause conjunctivitis and a third group cause gastroenteritis.

The subtype associated with the current outbreak of acute hepatitis is called adenovirus 41, a virus detected in at least 74 cases so far. Subtype 41 belongs to the adenovirus group that is usually associated with mild to moderate gastroenteritis. This can cause symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
