MUSAN: The world’s first underwater forest and museum opens in Ayia Napa, Cyprus

The unique MUSAN will be inaugurated on July 31 in Ayia Napa. This is the first Ayia Napa Underwater Sculpture Museum, where the visitor will have the opportunity to swim between nature and art.

This unique museum will house 93 works by artist Jason deCaires Taylor. The artist, who is one of the most famous representatives of the eco-art movement, inspired his works by nature and man. The statues will have a dual purpose: on the one hand, they will be a unique experience for visitors, on the other hand they will create the right conditions for the enrichment of marine life. How is this going to happen;

The statues are made of inert materials, with neutral pH, so as not to adversely affect the exhibition space. They will also be exposed to different depths to attract marine life at all levels. The place where they will be located is a sandy area, 200 meters from the coastline of Ayia Napa and it is expected that over time, the biodiversity of the area will be enriched thanks to the museum.

Those who will have the unique opportunity to visit the Museum, will be able to with a simple sea mask, but it seems that it will be very accessible to divers. Renowned British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor thus undertakes a different journey in the human-nature relationship. He has also designed the first Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park in Granada. In fact, this has been included in the list of 25 wonders of the world, according to National Geographic.

Artist Jason deCaires Taylor

The artist creates these “miracles” using his knowledge and skills as a sculptor, marine conservator, underwater photographer and scuba diving instructor, which on the one hand create a special exhibition space, and on the other hand improve marine life. Art critic Dr. David De Russo wrote that Taylor’s works are “a living, evolving exhibition that changes, develops and creates new life. They radiate hope and raise awareness about the environment. For this reason, it is a great honor and joy, for the sea of Cyprus, to host – from this month – such an important work of art conveying such important and essential messages “.

Finally, it is worth noting that the Ayia Napa area in Cyprus is developing rapidly. Skyscrapers and luxury homes are being built, but it seems that at the same time there is the intention and the appetite to create unique art and attractions. The museum is the result of a joint effort between the Municipality of Ayia Napa and the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research of Cyprus.
