Multidisciplinary artistic intervention by Maria Bălan (installation) & Adrian Drăguț (audio composition) at the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work in Bucharest

Within the multi-year program Un-hidden RomaniaMaria Bălan (installation) & Adrian Drăguț (audio composition) made a multidisciplinary artistic intervention at the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, University of Bucharest.

The work, installed in the outdoor space of Faculty of Sociology and Social Assistance from Panduri, is co-produced by the artist Maria Balan and the musician Adrian Dragut (Dragutesku). This new artistic intervention continues the cultural route of street art works in Bucharest, offering students, teachers, residents and visitors a new opportunity to contemplate the role of activism, articulated by the vibrant colors used by Maria Balan for this painting. By scanning the QR code inserted into the drawing, viewers can experience the work by listening to the musical fragment composed by Adrian Dragut (Draguteska).

Inspired by Sociona, the FSAS superhero, who is concerned that things work well in her community and acts for society to protect and promote human rights, the two artists worked in parallel to create an installation and a piece of music, which can be found in the courtyard of the headquarters in Panduri, as well as online, the page dedicated to the intervention.

The installation I made here, in the courtyard of the Faculty of Sociology and Social Assistance, represents Sociona, a hero-character of the faculty, a person who is an activist and fights for various social causes. The character inspired me to make a kind of self-portrait, speaking of the fact that I am interested in environmental issues and the art I make also has this activist area. I tried, in this installation, to convey the idea of a character who fights with what he has at hand. That is precisely why the character holds books and tools for drawing and painting. The idea is that we fight with what we have at hand and with what represents us.”, Maria Balan.

Faculty of Sociology and Social Assistance, UB thanks the cultural association Save or Cancel, coordinated by Cristina Popa and Andrei Racovitan, for our inclusion in the program of urban regeneration and humanizing spaces through art Un-hidden Romania. Thus, the external spaces of FSAS came to life, offering our students, but also tourists visiting Bucharest, an invitation to explore the complexity of social life, as well as to promote knowledge through street art. In addition to the character Sociona, the UB superhero who symbolizes the powers conferred by the specializations of our faculty, in the reinterpretation of the artist Maria Bălan, we also enjoy the large-scale mural created by iZZY iZVNE and BBoy Vean, exhibited on the heel of the faculty, a visionary creation that expresses six different worlds, portals to light and darkness, coexisting in balance. We also enjoy KSELEQOQYNQYSHY (Houses with Closed Eyes), a large-scale work that humanizes the entire courtyard of the faculty, made by the visual narrator Lucian Niță, which represents an infinity of colorful universes that can be discovered through meditation.”, Prof. dr. Doru BuzduceaDean of the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, University of Bucharest.

Join the program and experience music and visual art shaping public spaces.
