Melbourne – The match between Czech tennis player Karolína Muchová and world number one Ashleigh Barty will open Wednesday’s Australian Open program. Their quarterfinals begin in Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena an hour after midnight CET.
Twenty-four-year-old Muchová equaled her best grand slam result, which she achieved last year at Wimbledon, by advancing to the quarterfinals. The 27th player in the rankings has fought Barty once before and lost to her in the US Open in two sets in 2018.
Barty needs to win three more matches to end the long wait of Australian fans for the domestic champion. Christine O’Neil last won the Australian Open in 1978.
Wednesday program (starting at 1:00):
Roda Lavera Arena: Barty (1-Austr.) – Muchová (25-CR), 3:00 Brady (22-USA) – Pegula (USA), 5:00 Rublyov (7-RUS) – Medvedev (4-RUS), 9:30 Tsitsipas (5-Greece) – Nadal (2-Sp.).
