MPR Deputy Chairperson Reminds of the Dangers of Identity Politics, Don’t Repeat It in the 2024 Election

“This happened because identity politics is part of the political strategy itself which focuses on looking for differences in society, then takes advantage of society’s primordialism to attract political sympathy,” said Ahmad Basarah in a public discussion at Muhammadiyah University Jakarta (UMJ), Wednesday (17/5 ).

The head of the PDI Perjuangan faction gave an example of the case that occurred in the 2019 election, when the narrative of the Allah Party versus the Satan Party was easy to find.

There is also the 2019 Presidential Election likened to the Badr War in the time of the Prophet SAW.

Basarah emphasized that this was not true because the Battle of Badr was a battle between Muslims and polytheists who worshiped idols.

“Even though none of the Indonesian people worship idols, in fact the majority are Muslims,” ​​emphasized Ahmad Basarah in the discussion with the theme ‘Problematics of Identity Politics Ahead of the 2024 Election’ which was held by FISIP Masters of Communication Studies UMJ.

The chairman of the PDI Perjuangan DPP also reminded that for the sake of ambition to win election contests through inelegant shortcuts, identity political actors are even willing to carry out black campaigns through fake news, hoaxes, slander and other misleading news as long as their goals are achieved.

“They don’t care about national politics, it doesn’t matter if their actions threaten national unity or not, the main thing is that as long as they win, they will do whatever they can,” Basarah explained.
