On Saturday, the motorcycle blessing, which has been traditional for many years, was organized again in Domoszló. In the morning, the participants gathered in the church garden, where the program started with an outdoor mass celebrated by István Árvai, the Roman Catholic parish priest of Domoszló. After the distribution of blessings, the motorcyclists made a lap of respect in the village, which ended at the market square. The organizers awaited them there with lunch.
On behalf of the host Mátra Volán Motorcycle Friends Circle and the Domoszlói Motorcycle Outlaws, the organizer József Szabó told our portal that the idea of the motorcycle blessing was not originally his.
“Unfortunately, our motorcyclist friend who invented this a good 15 years ago has already passed away.” Back then, the whole event was even smaller and took place at the chapel. I asked the family for permission to pick up the thread where it was broken when our friend left. Since then, we have been holding the event at the church. From the initial 10-20 arrivals, in recent years, hundreds of motorbikes and their owners have appeared. Many of the visitors are obviously from the surrounding area, but we have already seen bikers from all over the country – from Budapest, Szolnok, Siófok, Cegléd, Szeged. Fortunately, the news of our meeting spread, and those who ride motorcycles, if the weather was good, have come so far. This year is our 10th anniversary event, and we will continue this tradition as long as we can. Traditionally, we treat the bikers to a bean stew after mass. We were able to obtain support for catering earlier. Times are more difficult now, this year we are financing the event on our own – detailed by József Szabó.
On behalf of the motorcycle team from Miskolc, Csaba Hegymegi said that they came to Domoszló with four motorcycles for last year’s event.
– This year we already came with 15 motorbikes. We hope that this meeting will continue to grow and that more and more people will come in the future. We have had good experiences with this event, and we have also heard favorable opinions about it from others. Receiving a blessing is important to us because it is good to know that there is a guardian angel over us. And such a mass is not everyday among bikers, because the priest celebrates it as if he were one of us. We also brought Mass wine for the reverend gentleman – declared Csaba Hegymegi.

The bikers from Miskolc added that they really need that certain guardian angel, because they think it’s an eternal truth that the motorcycle is a coffin above a speed of one hundred kilometers. Avoiding trouble, like everything in life, requires luck. The people of Miskolc also mentioned that they ask for double attention from motorists during the motorcycle season. As they said, there are many more cars and motorcycles on the roads than 10-15 years ago, but unfortunately the patience of drivers is getting less and less. Csaba Hegymegi added to this that he had worked abroad and found that Hungarians are much more impatient with traffic than the people living there.
Richárd Bárány from Gyöngyös talked about how he had wanted to come before, but it turned out that he could participate in the distribution of blessings in Domoszló for the first time. The motorcycle rider from Gyöngyös said that as a Christian, he considers receiving blessings very important. Imre Bartus from Abasar, also present for the first time, came on his motorcycle to ask for a priest’s blessing. His motorcycle – as he put it – was born in 1964, but it had not yet been blessed. He thought the time was right for this, added Imre Bartus.
