Four major motorcycle manufacturers – Honda, Yamaha, KTM and Piaggio – have announced a collaboration to standardize batteries for electric motorcycles, so that they can be interchangeable from one brand to another, informs AFP.

The four manufacturers, which are founding members of the Consortium for Motorcycles with Interchangeable Batteries (SBMC), believe that “the existence of a jointly developed interchangeable battery system is a key condition for the development of low voltage electromobility”.

Motorcycle manufacturers want to make interchangeable batteries. Why don’t car manufacturers do the same?

The standardization of batteries for electric motorcycles would pave the way for a common system for replacing spent batteries with charged ones, which would significantly reduce the time spent at charging stations. Such a system has been tried in the automotive industry by manufacturers like Nio, which offers this model in China. In this case, changing a battery takes only 5 minutes, much less than a reasonable charge.

However, the adoption of an interchangeable battery system in the automotive industry is complicated. Batteries are the most important component of an electric car, and their development includes intellectual property rights that every manufacturer wants protected from the eyes of competition. In addition, the best-performing batteries are liquid-cooled, which poses problems when disassembled and installed.

In the case of motorcycles, however, things could move much faster. Motorcycle manufacturers are not involved in the development of batteries, and their characteristics (air cooling, among others) make them more suitable for an interchangeable system. Thus, the entire industry could benefit from such a system.
