The second Sunday in May is traditionally the day on which we pay tribute to our dear mothers. But where did this holiday come from and how did our ancestors celebrate it?

Already the ancient Greeks paid homage to their mothers, worshiping the Asia Minor goddess Cybele, who was known as the “great mother of the gods”. This tradition was also adopted by the Romans during a series of religious celebrations in March called the Hilaria. During this period there were, for example, fasts, processions and sacred purifications in water.

From the USA to us

In modern times, the first Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908 in the USA, specifically at the Methodist Church of St. Andrew in Grafton, West Virginia. A certain Anna Jarvis had Mass celebrated for her late mother, who was a peace activist and cared for wounded soldiers in the American Civil War.

In 1908, the US Congress rejected a proposal to establish Mother’s Day with the sarcastic remark that it would also have to introduce a mother-in-law holiday. However, a few years later, the holiday gained more respect and began to spread throughout the world.

A common day, or a little thing that pleases In Czechoslovakia, Mother’s Day officially began to be celebrated in 1923, and its promoter was the daughter of our first president, Alice Garrigue Masaryková. It is a great opportunity to show your mom that she is important to you. Delight her with a day spent together, when no one will disturb you and you will have all to yourself.

Or if you often do not pay attention to the wife and mother of your sure offspring, you can at least make up for it a little with a Mother’s Day gift. You can’t forget that one. It will certainly be written and talked about everywhere, and shop windows will remind you of it.
