Eelmaa won the Ants Lauter Prize in 1984, the Big Carriage Prize in 1996, the Good Theater Prize in 2004, the Cultural Capital Annual Prize in 2005, the Helmi Tohvelman Prize in 2005 and the White Star Order of the White Star in 2004.

He has three children: actor and director Taavi Eelmaa, theater artist Liisi Eelmaa and Sander-Ott Eelmaa.
