More than a quarter of COVID-19 patients had symptoms after six months of illness.

Swiss researchers say in a study that more than a quarter of adult patients who have overcome the disease showed symptoms even after six months, reports EFE.

This study, published in the journal Plos One and conducted by the University of Zurich, involved 431 people who had COVID-19 between February and August 2020. Of those with persistent COVID-19, 55% reported fatigue as a symptom, 25 % difficulty breathing and 26% depression.

The team led by Milo Puhan of the University of Zurich found that 26% of those who fell ill did not fully recover within six or eight months of diagnosis, while 40% had at least one visit to the doctor after overcoming the acute stage of the disease.

Participants completed a form on their health after an average of 7.2 months after diagnosis. Of these, 89% had symptoms at the time of diagnosis, and 19% were hospitalized at the onset of the disease.

The data also show that a higher percentage of women and patients initially hospitalized said they did not fully recover, compared to men and those who overcame the disease without having to be hospitalized.

While the public health system’s response to SARS-CoV-2 initially focused on combating the acute period of the disease, the authors point out that more and more evidence shows that the infection can have long-term consequences for physical and mental health.

Therefore, they consider that these results show the need to plan resources in time and to adapt health services to the needs of people who have suffered from long-term COVID-19. AGERPRES
