More new houses with gas, target ‘still quite a challenge’ | Inland

The outcome contrasts sharply with the wish in the climate agreement to make the Dutch housing stock free from natural gas. Under the leadership of PvdA celebrity Diederik Samsom, the climate tables agreed to have 1.5 million homes disconnected from natural gas by 2030. “That goal is still quite a challenge,” concluded CBS spokesman Cor Pierik.

Disconnected

During the aforementioned period, the gas tap in 12,000 homes was finally disconnected. Together with 41,000 gas-free new-build homes, this brought the total to 53,000 sustainable Samsom homes. In the same years, however, the number of new homes with a gas connection grew even faster: by 78,000.

Pierik emphasizes that this partly creates a distorted picture. Since 2019, “a lot has really been done towards natural gas-free”, he says. In 2019 and 2020, for example, the percentage of new-build houses that were delivered without a natural gas connection grew rapidly. “But that can only be seen in next year’s CBS figures.”

Converting

Of the 7.8 million homes, 450,000 were heated in a different way than natural gas in 2019. To make this 1.5 million by 2030, the pace of the conversion must increase. With the pace of 2017-2018 – an average of 6,000 homes per year – the climate target would only be achieved in 175 years.

The province of Utrecht is the frontrunner in making natural gas-free with 0.4% of the existing homes. In Purmerend, the majority of houses use natural gas in percentage terms: 62.7%. These are now heated by burning woody biomass on a large scale.
