More Europeans died in traffic in 2021

Around 1000 more EU citizens lost their lives in traffic in 2021 compared to the previous year.

This appears from data published on Thursday by the EU’s statistical office, Eurostat.

The number of traffic fatalities in the 27 member states was 19,917. In 2020, a total of 18,834 people were killed.

While the number of traffic fatalities increased on a European level in 2021, the opposite happened in Denmark.

Here, 130 people lost their lives in traffic, while the previous year there were 163 fatalities.

However, for both Denmark and the rest of the EU, the number of traffic fatalities in both 2020 and 2021 was significantly lower than the previous years.

This can largely be attributed to the corona pandemic, the Road Directorate has previously stated.

In those two years, there was generally less activity on the roads and thus also fewer accidents.

This was due, among other things, to the fact that many worked from home due to corona restrictions and therefore did not commute to work.

The same applied to school pupils and students who were taught online.
