More and more elderly people die after falling: 5400 deaths last year

The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reports that last year an average of 14 people died per day as a result of a fall. In 2018 there were on average 13 per day.

According to the CBS, in a certain sense, more elderly people die after a fall due to an aging population: there are simply more elderly people than ten years ago. But it also happens more often: in 2011, 6.7 per thousand women aged 90 or older died after a fall, in 2021 that rose to 15.5.

Among men aged 90 or older, the number of deaths after a fall also rose: from 7.6 cases per thousand people in 2011 to 13.1 in 2021.

According to CBS, it is a fatal fall if someone accidentally trips, falls or slips and dies within thirty days. Whoever falls from the bicycle, for example, is not included, it is then a traffic accident.

Nearly half (43 percent) of the people who died last year after a fall were in their 80s, 36 percent were older than 90. Women were in the majority. CBS does not know how this is possible.

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s play a role

While in 2015, 3 percent of all deaths in an institution were caused by a fall, in 2021 this has increased to more than 5 percent. The increase was smaller for people who live at home (from 3 to 4 percent).

Underlying conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease appear to play a role. In 2021, such a condition was the ‘underlying or contributing cause of death’ for four in ten people who died from a fall accident.
