More and more companies are choosing Power-as-a-Service

Power-as-a-Service: More and more people are choosing high-voltage systems and electrified drivelines as their service

The majority of all businesses today are completely dependent on a well-functioning electricity supply. However, maintaining a safe, modern and adaptable electrical infrastructure such as switchgear and transformers requires both specialist competence and capital. Power-as-a-Service, or electric power as a service, is a solution that in practice means that all financial and functional responsibility is instead transferred to a company that specializes in electric power.

The Swedish company AstaReal is one of many companies that have chosen to invest in Power-as-a-Service. The company has developed a very advanced and unique technology for growing microalgae and extracting astaxanthin, an antioxidant with proven positive health effects. The entire process places high demands on, among other things, controlled temperatures, adapted light, continuous water and air circulation and sterile environments.

– A safe and stable electricity delivery is of utmost importance to us. With Power-as-a-Service, we can feel safe and avoid production stoppages if, for example, a power outage occurs, says Thomas Sundström, maintenance manager at AstaReal.

What is Power-as-a-Service?

Power-as-a-Service can be described as the service of electric power, a solution that is becoming increasingly common. A well-functioning power supply is for most people the main reason to choose Power-as-a-Service. Keeping up to date with updated technology and environmentally friendly solutions is becoming an increasingly important means of competition but requires expertise, time and capital. By choosing Power-as-a-Service, a specialized energy company instead takes over the overall responsibility for the electricity plant’s function and electrical safety as well as all investments.

For Åkers Sweden AB, a functional solution was a natural step in the development when the company was facing an expansion.

– Since technological development in all areas is fast, it is difficult to maintain our own competence in electric power. For us, Power-as-a-Service is a good concept where we get external help that contributes to a stable electrical system, says Mattias Abrahamsson, maintenance manager at Åkers Sweden AB.

Battery storage and charging solutions are part of the electrification

To slow down climate change, fossil fuels need to be phased out, which means investing in electrification. However, large-scale electrification will mean that higher power is taken out of our electricity networks. A solution to counteract future capacity shortages is to distribute energy consumption more evenly throughout the day and avoid power peaks, for example with the help of battery storage and smart charging solutions.

An example is an exciting research project where Boliden Bergsöe through Power-as-a-Service gets access to a battery warehouse that, among other things, will optimize costs by parrying the spot price and the electricity grid effect. The solution is also equipped with data control and prepared for the transition to electrification of its own operations.

– Batteries will be an important part of our work towards electrification and energy efficiency of our business at the same time as we also create higher energy security for other electricity customers, says Mats Gustavsson, energy manager at Boliden.

Another successful initiative is Vattenfall’s joint test project with LKAB, where they have switched to a rechargeable electric bus to transport the mining staff in Malmberget and Kiruna to their workplaces. The investment has led to fantastic results: CO emissions have been reduced by just over 7 tonnes a month by using a single electric bus.

What is Power-as-a-Service?

Power-as-a-Service can be described as service performance of electric power. Simply put, it is about shifting the focus from buying a product to buying a service instead. Service celebration is a concept that is becoming increasingly common. In the music, film, computer and software industries, it has been around for many years and is now standard. Common examples are Spotify and Netflix, where the need to buy CDs and DVDs has been replaced by having music and film delivered as a service.

By choosing that the high-voltage system such as switchgear and transformers is handled by a specialized energy company and switching to Power-asaService, the energy company takes over overall responsibility for the electrical system’s function and electrical safety as well as all investments. The company instead buys the electrical system’s function as a service, where the energy company ensures that the electrical system functions optimally based on the business’ specific needs.
