More and more accidents with small private planes

The Swedish Transport Agency’s safety overview for aviation 2020 shows that accidents with small Swedish-registered private planes have increased from 10 in 2019 to 19 in 2020. This is the highest number since 2014.

– It is difficult to give a simple explanation for why the number of accidents has increased. However, we can state that the largest increase has taken place in the ultra-light aircraft segment, from 2 to 8, says Andreas Tapani, section manager at the Maritime and Aviation Department at the Swedish Transport Agency, in a mailing.

At the same time as the number of accidents involving private aviation has increased, the reporting of unique safety-related incidents has decreased by 37 percent during the year. Most of that reduction can probably be attributed to the corona pandemic, according to the Swedish Transport Agency.

– The majority of reports normally come from the handling of charter and scheduled traffic at our airports. And it is precisely the traffic that has decreased the most due to the corona pandemic, states Andreas Tapani. On the other hand, reporting has probably not decreased as much for private aviation, which has been largely unaffected by the pandemic and even increased in some parts.

In 2020, 5 people died while flying with Swedish-registered small private planes. 4 people were seriously injured during paragliding. This is in line with the immediately preceding years.
