Montenegro accuses PS of “not wanting the whole truth to be known” about the Setúbal case

The candidate for leadership of the PSD this Friday accused the PS of “not wanting the whole truth to be known” about what happened in the reception of Ukrainian refugees in Setúbal, after the ‘lead’ of this mayor’s parliamentary hearing.

On the sidelines of the presentation of his representatives to the youth, Luís Montenegro said he heard on the way to the campaign initiative in Caxias (Lisbon) that the PS had refused the parliamentary hearing of the Mayor of Setúbal.

“It was wrong, we don’t want to scrutinize municipal decisions in parliament, but we want to scrutinize in parliament what an autarchy does in relation to the services that the government oversees”, he said.

The former parliamentary leader stated that “the PS seems not to want the whole truth to be known about what happened in Setúbal regarding the collection and possible processing of personal data of refugees and their families”.

The PS today justified the lead of the parliamentary hearing of the mayor of Setúbal on the reception of Ukrainian refugees with the “separation of competences” between the Assembly of the Republic and municipalities, but did not convince the opposition parties.

In the Constitutional Affairs Committee, most opposition parties contested the argument invoked by the PS to reject the hearing of André Martins, recalling that the case of the hearing of Fernando Medina, when he was mayor of Lisbon, on the case of sharing personal data of Russian activists opposing the Moscow regime with the Russian embassy in Portugal.

The parliament approved this Friday the hearing of the Minister of Internal Administration, José Luís Carneiro, and the Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Catarina Mendes, on the reception of Ukrainian refugees in that municipality.

In addition to these entities, the hearings of the Association of Ukrainians in Portugal, the High Commissioner for Migration, the Secretary of State for Equality and Migration and the Secretary General of the Internal Security System were unanimously approved.

Rejected, with the PS voting against, the requests to hear the Ambassador of Ukraine, the secretary general of the Republic’s Information System and the national director of the Aliens and Borders Service (SEF) ended.

The weekly Expresso reported on April 29 that Ukrainian refugees were received at the Setúbal Chamber by Russian sympathizers of the Vladimir Putin regime and that those responsible for the Refugee Support Line are photocopying refugee documents, including passports and certificates of children.
