MK Wasserman Landa: Crime in the Arab sector – a threat to Israeli society as a whole

“The scourge of crime and violence in Arab society is intensifying and becoming a strategic challenge. The problem has deviated from the criminal realm and is characterized by a loosening of governance in the public sphere. This is no longer just a ‘problem of the Arab public’, but a threat to Israeli society as a whole. The line that separates the criminal dimension from security threats is quite thin, and there is an actual leakage from the criminal field to the national one. ” This is what MK Ruth Wasserman Landa writes in a letter to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett about the growing crime in the Arab sector.

In her letter, Wasserman Landa (Blue and White), who serves as a member of the Internal Security Committee, the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and the National Infrastructure Committee, and serves as chair of the lobby for the eradication of violence and crime in Arab society, outlines the steps the state must take to address the phenomenon.

According to Wasserman Landa, the crime eradication program includes ten stages: semantic marking of the problem as a “coup d’etat,” a large-scale collection of weapons based on intelligence held by the police, the creation of a significant presence of law enforcement officials in the Arab street, and leadership harnessing Arab and the establishment of a joint and dedicated Knesset, whose role is to coordinate the various enforcement agencies: the GSS, the IDF and the police.

Wasserman Landa also offers to focus in a targeted manner on the plight of the younger generation in the face of rising unemployment among 18-24 year olds in the Arab sector. “The Arrangements Law has a national employment target for Arab men aged 25, but precisely between the ages of 18 and 24, when 30% of these yearbooks do not go to academic studies, employment opportunities must be opened up in order to fight crime,” she claims.

In addition, Wasserman Landa recommends that community trust in the police be restored, that Arabic-speaking social facts standards be increased and that the punishment for serious criminal and violent offenses be increased. Finally, Wasserman Landa offers promotion of information and dialogue with the Arab public.

“We are in an emergency and on the verge of a national catastrophe, so I submitted to the Prime Minister and Deputy Minister of Internal Security a ten-step plan for immediate implementation,” said Wasserman Landa. “Almost every day another victim is added to the long list of about 100 murdered since the beginning of the year. The treatment of Arab society has been neglected in recent years. It is inconceivable, for example, that there is no joint Sgt. This is just one step, and action must also be taken to create employment opportunities and emphasize the social aspect, ”she concludes.
