Last November, the public in Serbia was saddened by the news that a ten-year-old eagle fisherman was found dead near the village of Boćevica near Leskovac.

Fisherman Oli, as Finnish ornithologists called him, during the autumn migration he stayed in the Grdelica gorge for a few days, where he suffered from an electric shock on the Belgrade-Skopje railway. This graceful predator was monitored by experts with the help of a satellite transmitter until the moment when it stopped moving.

Ornithologists from the Society for the Protection of the Study of Birds of Serbia returned to their Finnish colleagues a satellite transmitter that was installed this summer on a new fisherman, named Rami.

“Rami is an adult male who nested in Finland this year at the site where the wind farm is planned to be built. We followed him closely to find out where he moves, on which waters he hunts and how high he flies, which is crucial for the study of assessing the impact of the wind farm on the environment, “explains Mati Suopajarvi, an ecologist from Finland.

Rami started his autumn migration on September 20 on the Finnish-Swedish border near Tornio. He arrived at his final destination in the north of Nigeria on October 31, after more than 6,500 kilometers traveled, covering an average of 160 kilometers per day. However, the journey of more than 1,000 kilometers across the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, from the Turkish part of Thrace to northeastern Libya, was completely flown by the eagle fisherman in 23 hours.

On the first African night, Rami slept on a transmission line pole, and for the next 11 days he flew over the Sahara, resting and sleeping on rocks and sand dunes. It is currently located in the fertile valley of the Komadugu River in Ghana, where it will probably spend the next 4-5 months.
