Minister of Manpower Asks Millennials to Improve Skills to Compete in the World of Work

Suara.com – The Minister of Manpower (Menaker), Ida Fauziyah, asked the millennial generation to continue to improve their skills in order to be able to compete in the world of work.

“Push your abilities as high as possible for mastery of technology, work competence, and often do positive collaborations, so that you can win competitive opportunities in the world of work,” said Ida during a keynote speech at the Dewas Greet Indonesia Webinar entitled “How Millennial Leaders Will Change Indonesia ” virtually on Wednesday, (11/10/2021).

On the occasion, Ida revealed a portrait of the condition of the National Employment. Based on BPS data as of August 2021, it shows that the working age population in Indonesia is currently 206.71 million people, consisting of 140.15 million people from the workforce and 66.56 million people from the non-labor force.

According to him, the majority of people who work in terms of education are junior high school graduates and below. From this condition, it can be seen that the working population is still dominated by low-skilled workers.

“This condition certainly poses a challenge for all of us to be able to continue to improve labor conditions in Indonesia through improving the quality, quantity and distribution of human resources (HR) of the workforce,” he said.

He added that the Covid-19 pandemic had an impact on increasing the use of technology that was able to change the face of industry and the economy both at the national and global levels.

According to him, technological innovations and new businesses together with changing consumer preferences will continue to transform global production. This will have an impact on the labor market and the types of skills required by the industry.

“Therefore, the millennial generation must master technology considering that economic digitization requires different skills from the previous era,” he concluded.
