Milanović on Austria’s position: Calculation of EU members behind Croatia’s back

Today, Croatian President Zoran Milanović expressed his concern about the statements of Austrian officials about Croatia’s entry into Schengen and thinks that, as he says, it is a calculation of other EU members behind Croatia’s back.

“I see statements from Austria that worry me. I think that it is a calculation over our backs among some other members of the European Union. That’s where Austria got involved, which has internal, visible, but unclear to me, reasons why it’s doing it,” says Milanović, his office announced.

He assesses that “all in all, it’s not good”.

“On Wednesday, the Austrian chancellor is coming to Zagreb to visit Plenković, who said that everything has been resolved, but it seems that it is not. I hope it will be resolved. When I talk to the Austrian chancellor, I will advocate entry into Schengen,” Milanović said in a statement to the media on Monday in Varaždin, commenting on the position of the Austrian interior minister that it is not time to expand the Schengen area.

According to Milanović, Croatia was technically ready to enter Schengen as early as 2016.

“Since then, we could have already become a Schengen member. Everything else is politics. Our government is trying, so far it has not succeeded, I hope it will,” he added.

The Croatian president is of the opinion that such decisions are not resolved by lobbying, as government representatives say.

“There is no lobbying when you are a state, first and foremost is politics, attitude and program. Lobbying is a murky but regulated activity. Croatia does not lobby, Croatia advocates, Croatia fights. We are not a lobby association, we are the Republic of Croatia, we are a member of the EU, we are a member of NATO. If something is important to us, then it is said – it can’t go on”, explained Milanović.
