Microsoft requires 1080p webcam for “Premium” Windows 11 laptops

There are few laptops that have a webcam with a full HD resolution. A few lucky ones are the latest MacBooks Pro 14 and 16, Microsoft’s Surface series and the Modular Framework. However, the vast majority have to make do with 720p or even less, and this is particularly disappointing with the many video calls that are made these days. Microsoft previously announced that all Windows 11 laptops must have a Precision touchpad and a webcam from 2023.

Now the new requirements for webcams and real-time communication have also been made public. According to the table, there are specific requirements for entry-level, mainstream and premium, the corresponding price ranges are not clear. For the two lower-positioned groups, a 1280 x 720 sensor with at least 30 frames per second at 80 lux is still sufficient. The horizontal viewing angle should be 65 degrees and is slightly wider for the premium rating at 75 degrees. The premium class should also have autofocus where the other types are allowed to have a fixed lens, both with a range of four meters. Furthermore, a visible LED should always be lit when the webcam is turned on and the sensor should be at eye level.

Then there are the requirements for microphones, which must always work even when the lid is down. For entry-level models, a dual-mic setup with a range of 0.8 meters is sufficient. The mainstream and premium class will get four with a four-meter range. The signal-to-noise ratio is 63, 65 and 67 dB(A) at 1 kHz and 94 decibels respectively. As for the speakers, a volume of 67, 70 and 73 decibels is recommended at a distance of eighty centimeters.

These documents were shared with the various manufacturers in May so there has been plenty of time to meet the specifications. Since these are purely recommendations, it remains to be seen how much of this we will actually see again.
