A refuge, a chapel, a small theater. The work Oak Barrel Baroque by Michael Beutler is the latest project to be added to seven other works (by Salvadori, Jodice, Missika, to name a few) visible for free in the spaces of La Raia, a project in the heart of Gavi, in Novi Ligure, which includes a biodynamic farm, a boutique hotel and an art foundation (run by Ilaria Bonacossa)
The German artist, known for his large sculptural installations linked to artisanal practices, created with natural materials such as recycled paper or wood and reactivated in a new function, such as the large Shipyard made at 57th Venice Biennale, intervened for the second time with his installations in the hills of de La Raia with a work built in wooden beams and barrique staves inspired by Palladian architecture and the churches of the Italian city squares.
Oak Barrel Baroque, what does it mean Baroque oak barrel, is an installation that recalls the history of rural architecture, creating a place to stop and rest designed for the people who cross thefarm exploring the works of art that have characterized the landscape since 2013. Developing his research related to materials, Beutler re-elaborates the forms of the residential and working buildings of the places, satisfying the atmosphere while changing their characteristics, purpose and function.
Beutler worked with a team of young assistants, realizing the entire work on site in about a month, transforming La Raia into a open-air workshop. Each oak stave obtained from the barriques and each beam, used for the supporting structures, were arranged and interlocked by hand according to a Japanese construction technique, without the use of screws or bolts, to take the shape of a votive temple with a sort of front proneum, antechamber and stage at the same time: the apse of the small structure is half barrel over four meters in diameter, resting on stilts at the bottom of a valley surrounded by oaks that close the vital circle linked to a plant so important for centuries for the production of wine. From the front of this structure, which at the same time evokes a small church and a small theater, you can enjoy, sheltered from the sun, the landscape and the vineyards of La Raia.
On the occasion of the inauguration, the show was staged Care Selve. Florilegio at Aline Nari.
