Minister of Defense Lubomír Metnar (for YES) has a coronavirus. The disease was confirmed by a test. The minister stated this on Twitter. He added that he has a cough and feels tired, but he still wants to work on an important agenda from home.
“I haven’t felt well in recent days and worked from home. Unfortunately, the covid test on Thursday confirmed that I was positive,” the minister wrote. “I have a cough and I feel tired, but I am and hopefully will continue to be able to deal with an important agenda online,” he added.
Ministry of Defense spokesman Jan Pejšek said that Metnar expects to participate in Monday’s government, which will act by video conference. Ministers should deal with the return of ten billion crowns to the budget of the Ministry of Defense. The money was transferred to the budget reserve last December when the budget was approved due to a request from the Communists. Government officials then promised to return the entire amount to the army. The state was originally supposed to do so at the beginning of January, later Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (YES) promised to discuss the transfer by the end of the month.
Other members of the government also had coronavirus, this week a positive test was announced by Foreign Minister Tomáš Petříček (ČSSD). According to government spokesman Vladimír Vořechovský, Metnar and Petříček could not become infected during a joint ministerial meeting at the Straka Academy. “All sessions are online,” he said.
Other members of the cabinet have also fallen ill before. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Jan Hamáček apparently became infected by the Minister of Agriculture Miroslav Toman (both CSSD), who met in the People’s House. At that time, other members of the CSSD, including the Minister of Culture Lubomír Zaorálek, were quarantined. The Minister of Social Affairs Jana Maláčová, as well as Petříček, were in voluntary isolation several times due to coronavirus. For several weeks, the Minister for Regional Development Klára Dostálová (for YES) was ill due to the infection, working from home at the time. She said at the time that she had apparently contracted the family.
According to the media, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (YES) also had Covid in his family last year. He chose separation then. At the end of December, the Prime Minister was the first in the Czech Republic to be vaccinated. He will have his second dose of vaccine next week.
