Mesud Keranović is a Muslim who is rebuilding the Serbian church

The four-member Muslim family Keranović from Bosnia and Herzegovina, with little material and a lot of will, decided to bury the axes of war with their neighbors and build a foundation of peace on the ruins of the old Serbian church in the village of Osredak. Mesud Keranović, the man who started this touching story, talks about it for

Mesud Karanović, at first glance an average man, a builder by profession, dared to undertake an endeavor that may exceed his capabilities, but he will do his best to persevere, finish it and leave an indelible mark.

Namely, four years ago, with the support of his family and close circle of friends, Keranović decided to rebuild the long-destroyed Orthodox church in the village of Osredak near Cazin (BIH), where he has lived for 40 years.

“I started with this job because I simply felt the need and I felt I should do this. You know, I don’t have an easy life story. I struggled, I fought in the war, I was even wounded. Then, all those friends from whom life separated me… There was a lot of sadness. Every morning I watch our and their cemetery, which resonates with the division between us and them. They are somewhere far away now, they left because of the war. We are all really just people and that is what, among other things, I want to show with what I do “, Keranović told

At the moment when the renovation started, Mesud remembers, the church was one step closer to demolition. The cracked walls of the old place of worship were completely cracked and almost parted. Now, however, the situation is much different.

“Currently, the works are stopped, but that is because of the pandemic and this whole situation with the crown, although we are already in the very end. We are left with the final works on the carpentry and the facade “, he states.

Unfortunately, the locals did not understand, but fortunately for Mesud, his sons are studying construction, so they are full of ideas that they use for the project.

In addition to his sons, his biggest support is his wife Fatima, who had no difficulty in “accepting” lunch and faithfully encouraging her husband to “accept” more difficult physical work. So on one occasion she even helped with lifting the tiles.

“The reactions of the locals have improved a bit, but there are still people who think negatively, but no one said anything in my face. My biggest support is still my family and a small circle of friends “, adds Mesud.

When it comes to his childhood neighbors, the Serbs, the situation is different. Although they have not lived in the village for years, they often visit it. Their fasts are marked by conversations near this church, next to which the cemetery was destroyed. This sad image, among other things, was the trigger that awakened in Mesud the will to share. As he says, it is not pleasant for him to talk to them near the ruin, which is their sanctuary.

As it is about the renovation of the Orthodox building, it is logical to expect the support of the church. But she was absent this time as well.

“The church did not donate anything to us, mostly it’s just donations from people who grew up here and now live somewhere far away, for example in Australia, Canada.” Only the government helped us with a one-time donation of 5,000 marks. monitors the spending of that money “, Keranović emphasizes.

He adds that all the villagers used to play together there as children, without divisions. And he regrets that the war divided them. But he hopes that this is over, and that people will be united in good and noble deeds in the future, such as the renovation of this church.
