Mercedes switched trailers to renewable fuel

During a series of built stages at Spa, Saanfdort and Monza, Mercedes experimented by converting all 16 trailers that carry the team’s racing cars and equipment to 100% renewable biofuels. Only to overcome the last 20 kilometers, due to supply problems, the trucks had to be filled with conventional diesel.

The tanks of the trailers were filled with the so-called HVO 100 fuel, which is obtained from vegetable and waste oils, fats and does not contain fossil fuels. The use of HVO 100 saved 44,091 kg of CO2 and reduced emissions by 89%.

Biofuels are already being used in motorsport – from this season Formula 1 cars are already filled with E10 biofuel, and in 2026 a transition to 100% synthetic fuel is planned.

Toto Wolff, Team Leader: “The trial use of biofuels for ground transportation of the team’s machinery and equipment is another example of our commitment to implementing the principles of sustainable development. We strive to be at the forefront of change and hope that we can implement sustainable technologies.”
