Mercedes launched SAE Level 4 autonomous parking at Stuttgart Airport

We will certainly have to wait for some time for autonomous car driving, however, development continues and Mercedes-Benz launches the first commercial Level 4 (SAE Level 4) autonomous driving service. It applies to the S-Class luxury sedans and the electric EQS, which are equipped with the Level 3 Drive Pilot system. It will soon be supplemented by Intelligent Park Pilot, which is already a system of the 4th level of autonomy. It will therefore not require the presence of a backup driver to drive.

But before we start cheering (or, on the contrary, threatening) that autonomous cars are already here, we need to remember that this will really be very limited traffic. For the time being, this will only apply to the airport in Stuttgart and the P6 parking hall with the two types of cars mentioned above. In cooperation with the Apcoa company, the Apcoa Flow mobile platform and the Mercedes me mobile application, drivers will be able to reserve a parking space at the airport, have the option of contactless entry and exit and payment through the system.

Instead of drivers looking for a parking spot, they stop at a predetermined spot and the car then automatically drives itself to the reserved spot (Automated Valet Parking service). Upon arrival, the driver can then call his car in a similar way. Although this is level 4 driving, it must be noted that it only applies to this limited space and it is not possible to use the car in the same way on normal roads and other parking lots. There, the cars continue to work at a maximum of level 3, so you need to keep an eye on them.
