Mercedes-Benz will also support Apple Car Key

Apple’s Car Key function for iPhone and Apple Watch will also be supported by Mercedes-Benz, as indirectly confirmed by Apple itself.

Changes to Apple’s backend configuration files for the feature Car Key which were updated today they understand references to the car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz.

Only a few brands including BMW, BYD, Genesis, Hyundai and Kia have so far introduced support for the Car Key function on selected models, which we recall allows you to add a digital key key to the Wallet app on your ‌iPhone‌ and Apple Watch and then lock, unlock and start your vehicle without needing a physical key. Just a month ago, Lotus appeared in Apple’s configuration files as another upcoming brand with support for this feature.

Mercedes-Benz confirmed that the new E-Class sedan will support the feature, as part of its KEYLESS-GO convenience package. The E-Class digital key can be shared with up to 16 people, with the master user being able to assign certain permissions to specific users such as only allowing access to the vehicle or even driving.

Depending on the technology adopted by each manufacturer, it may be necessary to hold the device near the door handle or the reader inside the car, while other vehicles may support passive access where the digital key will work without having to bring the iPhone or Apple Watch near to specific elements of the vehicle. Selected vehicles can also support remote locking and unlocking using the digital car key.
