Mercedes Benz has introduced a vehicle with solar cells

The German carmaker is pushing the boundaries again – three times. The latest subtype of the VISION EQXX electric vehicle is not only an efficiency record because it can cover 1,000 km on a single charge, but also the interior of the car is made of exclusively vegan materials, while the roof has solar cells for additional battery power.

According to a company statement, VISION EQXX demonstrates how efficient, sustainable and luxurious electromobility can be.

This model owes a range of 1,000 km to flawless aerodynamics, which, as explained, is key to achieving the efficiency of electric cars, since two thirds of the electricity is needed only to overcome air resistance. With a drag coefficient of just 0.17, the VISION EQXX is designed to easily “cut” air, and 95 percent of the energy from the batteries reaches the wheels.

Combined with the aerodynamic design, and a significant improvement in battery life contributes to achieving a record range. Instead of making the battery bigger and heavier, the energy density has been significantly improved, allowing the VISION EQXX to store 100 kWh, while taking up 50 percent less space and 30 percent less weight than comparable capacity batteries.

The electrical system, which powers many auxiliary units in the VISION EQXX, draws additional energy from the solar cells on the roof. In one day with ideal conditions, solar energy can produce up to 25 kilometers of additional range for long-distance travel, the German company said in a statement.

When it comes to the interior, VISION EQXX is adorned with a blend of sustainable materials consisting of mushrooms, cactus, bamboo and vegan silk. In this way, Mercedes proves that it is possible to achieve maximum luxury without the use of products of animal origin, while creating a unique feeling of superior comfort.
