The Portuguese men’s artistic gymnastics team surpassed the initial objective proposed by its coach, José Augusto Dias, at the European Championships in Munich, Germany, by qualifying two athletes for the October World Cups in Liverpool, England.
“We came with the objective of trying to qualify a gymnast for the World Cup and we got two, we exceeded our expectations”, José Augusto Dias, coach of the Portuguese men’s team, told Lusa, referring to the qualification of José Nogueira (38th in ‘ all-around’) and Guilherme Campos (54th).
The coach stressed that the Portuguese team is “very young and has room for progression for the 2023 Europeans”, in which Portugal intends “to be among the 13 teams that advance to the World Cup”.
“In Munich, we lacked our best gymnast, Bernardo Almeida, injured. He will be a reinforcement and the current youngsters will be more experienced. We want to dream and work towards it”, underlined the coach.
Summarizing the participation in the championships, José Augusto Dias highlighted the two A-level results for high performance, “because they are in the first third of the classification”, and “all the other results are of level B”.
Portugal was also present in the women’s competition, which took place in the first days of the European Championships and in which the young Mariana Parente, only 15 years old, was also successful, with her 50th place in the ‘all-around’, with 46,733 points, also guaranteeing Liverpool’s presence in the world championships.
The second edition of the European multisport championships is taking place in Munich until Sunday and brings together nine sports, with Portugal represented in seven, namely athletics, canoeing, cycling, artistic gymnastics, rowing, table tennis and triathlon.
The Portuguese team has won three medals so far, two gold, through Pedro Pablo Pichardo, in the triple jump, and Iúri Leitão, in the track cycling scratch, and one silver, by Auriol Dongmo, in the shot put.
