Medicine / Health, Illness | WHO experts have arrived in China

January 13, 2021

Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) have arrived in Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus was first discovered in late 2019.

It has been uncertain whether the expert group was allowed to travel to Wuhan, but on Thursday the state-owned TV channel CGTN showed pictures of a plane from Singapore that landed. On board were the international experts who will investigate how the virus originated. They were greeted by Chinese officials wearing protective suits.

The WHO mission is considered important to get to the bottom of the cause of the outbreak of covid-19- Scientists first thought that the virus had spread to humans at an animal market in Wuhan. But now several experts believe that the virus did not originate on the market, but that it was rather amplified there.

After a long period of tug of war between China and the WHO over dates, itineraries and visas, the experts have now finally arrived. The ten experts must first be quarantined for two weeks. Then they can start the investigations, which are expected to last for several weeks.
