MediaTek launches Dimensity 1200, a powerful chipset for budget phones

Dimensity 1200 comes with ray tracing support for next-gen games, refresh rates up to 168 Hz and 200 MP photo sensors. MediaTek offers even a more affordable alternative, Dimensity 1100, with low frequencies and some features missing.

MediaTek debuted the Dimensity 1000 series in 2019, delivering performance far beyond the expectations of a low-cost smartphone. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese manufacturer has raised the bar with Dimensity 1000 Plus, a solution with competent performance, but not exactly at the level of the Snapdragon 865 alternative. The performance gap would be covered by the Dimensity 1200 series.

The new SoC benefits from a superior manufacturing process, on 6nm, but also an improved CPU with Cortex-A78 cores (3Ghz + 2.6 GHz) + Cortex-A55 (2.0GHz). There is also a 5G modem, the chosen solution offering only access to networks in the sub-6Ghz band (without mmWave). This translates into slightly lower transfer speeds, but without compromising on the coverage offered (mmWave technology is one with extremely short coverage). Bonus, phones based on Dimensity 1200 will also have dual SIM support in 5G mode.

The list of features is completed with support for Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, HDR10 +, 4K / 60fps video decoding and AV1, plus a dedicated AI processor. It provides features such as AI Panorama Night Shot, AI Multi-Person Bokeh, AI Noise Reduction and AI SDR-to-HDR.

It remains to be seen how practical this feature is, but the graphics core integrated with the Dimensity 1200 chipset provides ray-tracing support, a technique used to provide more realistic lighting and reflections for games running on the PC platform. Instead, on mobile the support is a bit more “rarefied”. MediaTek is not very helpful either, the expression “some ray-tracing effects” being rather ambiguous.

Although not a “round” figure, the refresh rate at 168Hz in FHD + mode could be taken over by some smartphone manufacturers who choose to “force” screens designed for 144Hz. It remains to be seen how good the practical results are.

In terms of photo support, the 200MP resolution is valid for a single optical sensor, Dimensity 1200 supporting dual-camera configurations with 32MP + 16MP. At least the media does not exclude the 4K HDR option.

The low-cost alternative Dimensity 1100 reduces the nominal operating frequency on the CPU side to 2.6GHz and delivers the same Mali-G77 MP9 GPU encountered last year. The FHD + screen cannot use more than 144Hz, or 90Hz in QHD + mode.

The photo configuration cannot exceed the resolution of 108MP.

Overall, neither the phones based on Dimensity 1100, the performance penalty is not significant.
