McLaren Artura, when the plug-in hybrid crosses the V6 supercars

The McLaren Artura marks a new turning point in supercar evolution: it is the first British super sports car to combine the efficiency of plug-in hybrid technology with the high performance of a 3.0 V6 biturbo. In total, the combined power amounts to 680 hp.

We saw it live at the Milano Monza Motor Show 2021, and we will tell you about it in video live that you find above.

Powerful and light

The technical goodies are not only in the engine: for example the skeleton of the Artura, the MCLA platform (“McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture”), allows you to contain the weight below 1,400 kg, more or less like a Volkswagen Golf GTI. The architecture consists of a carbon fiber monocoque, the chassis and the electrical structure.

The powertrain delivers a total of 680 hp and is composed of a 585 hp 3.0 biturbo V6, coupled with a 95 hp electric motor. The V6 is more compact and lighter than the V8: this also means reduced weight, and in fact it is 50 kg lighter.

This combination of power and lightness results in a more performing model than the Elva and the Senna. We are in fact talking about a specific power of 487 hp per ton.

The two turbochargers are positioned about 4 cm lower than those of the V8 mounted on the 720S. In addition, the compact dimensions of the engine have allowed for more space for cooling, while the exhaust system is almost completely straight to minimize power and “sound” losses.

Behind the cabin is the true beating heart of McLaren, namely the battery pack. It is positioned in the center for better weight distribution, and the modules are made of carbon fiber to reduce its mass, while the protective structure improves safety in the event of an accident. Finally, there is the electric motor which is placed inside the transmission for a more immediate delivery of power.
