Mazda’s mid-range CX-5 gets a subtle facelift for 2022. Better (sound) comfort and more driving pleasure are promised. Among the news is also a new driving mode selector and a couple of special models.
Blink and you miss the changes to the 2022 model Mazda CX-5. Apart from an updated grill, bumper and lamp design, not much has happened on the outside. However, something has happened under the shell.
None of these, however, apply to the engine program, which still consists of a mixture of unelectrified petrol and diesel engines with either front- or four-wheel drive and between 150 and 194 horsepower.
The special model Mazda CX-5 Homura will be the “sportier” choice with 19-inch wheels and exterior details in black
Instead, it is the driving experience that should have been sharpened and Mazda’s engineers should have improved both riding comfort and driving pleasure by focusing on, among other things, the shock absorption and wheel suspension.
In addition, the sound insulation should have been further improved – while a quieter compartment was one of the main improvements when the current generation of the CX-5 was released in 2016. Riding in the first generation from 2012 was a noisy experience.
The car’s safety system has also been expanded with a new queue assistant called “Cruise & Traffic Support (CTS)” which can control acceleration, speed, deceleration and steering when queuing at speeds up to 60 km / h.
In addition, the car’s adaptive headlights have been updated with more individually dimmable sections per headlight – twenty instead of twelve.
Inside has Among other things, an induction charger for the mobile phone has been added and a new driving mode selector called “Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive)”. On four-wheel-drive CX-5s with a petrol engine, there is then, among other things, a new terrain mode that will provide improved passability on bad roads and / or slippery surfaces.
The floor for the luggage compartment must also be new and, unlike before, now provides a smooth load surface when the rear seat is folded down. Interestingly, Mazda has not shared any press photos on just this, so we can simply take them at their word.
New special models
The model program is also expanded with two new special models: Newground and Homura.
The former is an “off-road-inspired” model that should be adapted for an active lifestyle. The only real adaptation for this, however, is the detachable load floor, which on this particular model is reversible with a sore back that can withstand wet and dirty objects.
Otherwise is mostly a styling package with different colored details. For example, the grill has a lime green accent that can also be found in several places in the interior.
The same can be said about Homura which should be the “sporty” choice with many black details and no accent colors. The upholstery on both Newground and Homura is a combination of suede and artificial leather.
